About Hutch: I am currently finishing my studies at the University of Hawaii and hope to soon have a Masters degree in Chinese language and literature. However, when I'm presented with opportunities to pursue acting work, I try my best to do both (usually though I end up skipping class). Besides acting, I also have a passion for art. I am an artist (digital painting) and some of my paintings have won several awards in national/international jurried art competitions. Originally a native of Rochester, New York, I have been living in Hawaii since 2003. Upon graduating from the University of Rochester in 1976 (B.A. Degree in Chinese language and Asian Studies), I was commissioned a 2nd Lieutenant in the United States Marine Corps. I retired from the Corps in July 2006 at the rank of Colonel after 30 years of service which included numerous tours of duty and deployments in the Asia-Pacific region (Okinawa, Korea, Republic of the Philippines, Thailand, Hong Kong and the People's Republic of China), and duty in Saudi Arabia and Kuwait where I participated in Operations Desert Shield and Desert Storm. In addition to completing numerous command and staff assignments during my military career, I also earned an M.A. degree in National Security and Strategic Studies from the U.S. Naval War College; served as a Congressional Fellow in the United States Senate working both as a Professional Staff Member for Senator Sam Nunn and as a staff member on the Senate Armed Services Committee (providing support on issues in the Asia-Pacific region); and served 3 years at the U.S. Embassy in Beijing as the United States Marine Attache to the People's Republic of China. My last active duty assignment was here in Honolulu at the Asia-Pacific Center for Security Studies where I served as the Chairman of the Regional Studies Department in the College of Security Studies. To help maintain my creativity and artistic 'flow', I believe it is important to have both a physical and mental balance in my daily life. I am an avid outrigger canoe paddler, rugby enthusiast (no common sense here), jog and enjoy the martial arts. Jazz is my favorite music (although my tenor saxophone playing leaves a lot to be desired), I'm a movie/film fanatic, can't get through the day without doing at least one crossword puzzle and I read to keep abreast of the political-military issues affecting the security landscape of the Asia-Pacific region.... read more
