Audition Description

What would it be like if a Metroid movie was made? What would the story be? How would an adaptation handle the origin of a video game character like Samus Aran? It got my mind racing with possibilities and I wrote a rough script of what I would want from a Metroid movie. It isn't an actual script, but more of a detailed outline of how I'd want the movie to progress. I spent months cleaning it up to make sure this idea was as polished as possible.

  • Role #1 - Mother Brain

Those who are familiar with Mother Brain in the games will know who this character is. For everyone else, this is a giant brain in a jar who serves as the final boss of the original game. Mother Brain has never been shown speaking before, but I feel it's integral to a possible movie. She begins as a supercomputer designed to help the Galactic Federation achieve a level of communication across the galaxy that's unheard of and was developed with the help of the dying Chozo race. This causes her to be more A.I.-like in her appearance during Act 1. However, she is eventually taken by the Space Pirates and becomes much more malevolent and convinced of her superiority, especially in regard to the wholly mechanical recreations of her known as the Aurora Units. Her voice in Act 3 (which is where the audition lines come from) would be closer to the Borg Queen from Star Trek: First Contact. Calm, but always giving a threatening aura. She is in complete control.

  • Role #2 - Adam Malkovich

Adam Malkovich is Samus's commanding officer and a respected member of the Galactic Federation. While he's become a bit of a joke to the Metroid community thanks to Other M, I want to convey why he should be respected. Like his younger brother, Ian, he recognizes the talent that Samus possesses and wants to help shape her into a fine soldier. But he also knows her impulses directly contradict Federation protocol. He struggles with this dichotomy, but he rarely shows it, especially not to her. He is cool and even tempered at all time, helping to give the sense that he's always in full control of what is happening. This is emphasized in the first audition line where he's speaking with Samus after she went rogue during a training mission. He wants to impress upon her the importance of rules. However, he's shown to be a little more vulnerable later when speaking with Ian about her. He shows a slight weakness in his voice, very slight. It's more about highlighting his own frustration with the Federation.

  • Role #3 - Gray Voice

Gray Voice is one of the last of the Chozo, an ancient race with technology spread all across the galaxy. With only three male members left, all of whom are hundreds of years old, it is inevitable that their race will die out. To leave something for the next generation, they initially planned for Mother Brain to be the last of their legacy. But with the Space Pirates attack and theft of her, they focused their attention on the young Samus, the only survivor of the Pirate Raid. Now Gray Voice serves as her guide, teaching her the ways of the Chozo, from their history to their combat skills. He's often impatient with her, frustrated by the barriers she's put up for herself that prevent her from fully using the Chozo's Power Suit. But he does love her and this shows in their quiet moments, which is the basis for the first audition line. The second audition line highlights one of his more frustrated lines, when Samus is having trouble mastering the Power Suit. And the final audition line shows how much he truly cares for her as Gray Voice begs her to escape when the Space Pirates attack the Chozo. Give it a sense of pleading and care. He desperately wants her to be safe. As for how the voice sounds, he's an old man with a strong voice. I don't have a full idea of what I'd like so I'm open to interpretation so I can see what clicks.

  • Role #4 - Ellen Hardy

Ellen Hardy is a squadmate of Samus and a completely original character. I wanted someone in the Federation that Samus could bounce off, someone that wasn't in a position of authority that she was constantly butting against. That said, it's not like the two never fight as evidenced by the first audition line. She always gets annoyed at how overprotective Samus can be. Yet despite these fights, she's still there to listen aand challenge her friend, trying her best to steer Samus away from her unfortunate past. This more supportive role comes out with the 2nd audition line. Perform it as if she has her hand on Samus's shoulder and is gently leading her away from a possible path. Strong, yet understanding.

  • Role #5 - The Elder

The Elder is the oldest-living Chozo and the emotional guide for Samus. The two connected immediately when he first visits her colony. He loves children and the hope they bring to the world, which is why he was so desperate to save Samus when her colony was attacked. Like the other Chozo, he sees Samus as a daughter. He is ancient and wise, with a frail body that cannot handle the Power Suit anymore. Think of an older, weak voice that is full of absolute warmth. The audition line is also his only lines, but they are crucial as the come at a major part of the story and serves as the theme of this hypothetical movie.

  • Role #6 - Ian Malkovich

Ian Malkovich is Samus's squad leader and younger brother to their commander, Adam Malkovich. While he was shown in the game, Metroid: Other M, this is a slightly different take on him. He's a good soldier who respects his brother and sees potential in Samus. He wants to smooth out her rougher edges though as she tends to want to do things on her own. The problem is, even he knows the Federation's strict regulations are often at odds with what should be done. He wants to find a balance, if possible. For his voice, he's a young man that can put out a tough persona, but he's not gruff. For the audition lines, he is reprimanding Samus after she went rogue during a training exercise. Try to give a sense of exasperation along with a slightly commanding presence.
