In October of 1998, Matthew Shepard, 21-year old college student was found in the hills outside of Laramie, Wyoming tied to a fence and brutally beaten. He died several days later as a direct result of that act of violence. Two local young men were arrested, tried, convicted of murder and sentenced to life in prison.
The media and news stories of his death shocked the nation and became a symbol of hate and intolerance. Though for the people of Laramie, this event proved to be very personal. This play is about the people of Laramie in the aftermath of the beating and murder of Matthew Shepard. It is their voices we experience in this theatrical collage which explores the depths to which humanity can sink and the heights of compassion of which humanity is capable.
The Laramie Project was created through 1 1/2 years of research and 6 visits to Laramie to conduct over 200 interviews with members of the Laramie community.
