Audition Description

Set in 1986, an apathetic military lawyer is assigned to the case of two Marines charged with the murder of a fellow squadron member at the Guantanamo Bay Naval Base. Upon the assumption that an illegal retaliatory order was given to cover up a commanding officer's actions, Lieutenant Commander Joanne Galloway, an Internal Affairs legal ace, thinks there is something amiss. As the defendants refuse a plea bargain based on their belief in the military code of honor, the facts come out and lead to a court martial courtroom show down that exposes the truth.

  • Role #1 - Lt. Jg.Daniel Kaffee

A young JAG lawyer, extremely intelligent, but refuses to take his career seriously and has a callow and flippant personality. Kaffee's father was a very famous trial lawyer, and it is suggested that Kaffee feels haunted by this, afraid that he will never measure up to his father's celebrity. One thing he does seem to take seriously (at least in the first act of the play) is his softball team, he is accused him of "treading water" until his three required years with the military are complete--something he never denies.

  • Role #2 - Lt. Cmdr. Joanne

Lt. Cmdr. Joanne Galloway: One of the attorneys assigned to the defense in the Santiago murder trial. Essentially she badgers her way into the case because she believes so strongly in making sure they get the legal representation they deserve. Joanne cares deeply about justice, and she is obsessed with accuracy and detail. She has a reputation for being a stickler for paperwork. Although she outranks Kaffee, she is less of a natural leader than he is.

  • Role #3 - Lt.Col.Nathan Jessep

The commander for the naval base at Guantanamo Bay. It is his responsibility to hold the United States' military position in Cuba, a job that he takes very seriously. Jessep is an ambitious man. He is the youngest Colonel in the North American command and he currently has his eye set on a seat with the National Security Council. He is intensely aware that any missteps between now and then could cost him his future. He is clever and well-read, and frequently uses sarcasm to humiliate those around him. He believes that because he has a "greater responsibility than you can possibly fathom," he is not judged by the same laws as normal people. This is Most importantly, Jessep is secretly proud of his actions.

  • Role #4 - Pfc. Louden Downey

One of two young men accused of murdering William Santiago, a fellow Marine. He is young and impressionable and believes deeply in the Marine code of honor: unit, corps, God, country. Like Dawson, he is undaunted by physical challenges but is greatly out of his depth in a courtroom. The entire trial process is frightening and confusing to him. Louden Downey is a deeply honorable person, he merely thought he was obeying orders.

Dawson does not have a very high opinion of Daniel Kaffee, the lawyer assigned to his defense.

A military attorney assigned to the case as additional help for Daniel Kaffee. He's a good friend of Daniel, and sometimes shares his flippant attitude. Although at the beginning of the play he's not very sympathetic to the accused, he works hard for them. He views them as bullies who killed a weak classmate simply because he was different, and it's difficult for him to move past that viewpoint. Sam is also very physically tired for most of the play, because he is sleep-deprived. He has a baby daughter at home (who is sure will say her first words any day now). He misses her and his wife, Laura, deeply.

After Santiago's death, he does what he can to shed light on the conspiracy at Guantanamo, but kills himself rather than testify in court. He writes a letter of apology to Santiago's parents, asking their forgiveness for failing to save their son. Markinson provides a father figure to the men of his unit. He looks out for his men and tries to do right by them. In one of the opening scenes we see him attempting to prepare Dawson and Downey for their experience in Washington.
