Audition Description

'My Dinner with Shakespeare' is a light hearted drama with comedic elements that tells the story of Edgar, an aspiring playwright suffering from writer's block who longs to be like his role model William Shakespeare, and casts away his relationships to focus on pursuing his dream. Edgar wakes up one morning to find Shakespeare, the Bard himself, in his apartment, and, eager to get writing advice from the greatest playwright known in history, sets off on an adventure through the city with William. William, however, is more interested in being alive and embracing experience than talking about plays, and, through their blooming friendship, Edgar learns that, in order to write about life, one must first live.

  • Aspiring writer who has had a passion for storytelling ever since he was a young child sharing short stories with his best friend Caleb. Edgar fell in love with literature and the theater, dreaming of one day becoming a great writer like his hero, William Shakespeare. While he is timid and shy, Edgar is also ambitious and incredibly driven. However, even though he pours all of his efforts into trying to become a writer, Edgar has a crippling fear of failure that has caused him to become stricken with a terrible case of writer's block. It took Edgar a lot of courage to drop out of University two years into his degree to formally commit himself to pursuing writing, but, now that he has received rejection after rejection, all while watching many of his friends and peers move on to have successful careers and families, Edgar is beginning to doubt himself. Edgar measures his quality as a human being by his achievements, something that causes him to slave over his work and second guess his instincts constantly. He sets alarms in his phone to remind himself to keep writing, spends late nights burying himself in his work, neglecting to properly take care of himself or make any time for his friends and family. As a result, over the years Edgar has fallen out of contact with many people in his circle of friends, and is looked at as something of a recluse by most of his peers with the exception of his best friend Caleb, who has supported and stood by Edgar and his dreams ever since Elementary school. Through his interactions with William, Edgar comes to see this renowned historical figure whom he idolizes and places on a pedestal as a human being with flaws and foibles. While he initially desires for William to mentor him in the craft, it is only through connecting with William as a person that Edgar is able to rediscover why he fell in love with storytelling in the first place.

  • Role #2 - William Shakespeare

The Bard of Avon himself, William Shakespeare, has come back to life for a day after spending several centuries lying under a stone slab in Holy Trinity Church. Even though he has been dead for 400 years, William is still young at heart. He is wily, wise, and brimming with an insatiable desire to explore the world around him and connect with other people. However, William's free spirit is troubled by the ghosts of his past. Now, all of these centuries later, William sees a chance to make peace with the mistakes of his past and seeks to help the struggling young Edgar find his way. Will sees a bit of himself in the young aspiring author, and wishes to impart to Edgar all of the lessons that he learned the hard way. William is, at his core, a deeply compassionate human being who finds his purpose in bringing joy to those around him.

  • Caleb is Edgar's closest and oldest friend. They are earnest, cheerful, and loyal to a fault, always thinking of how they can be there to support and encourage their best buddy. Edgar and Caleb met during elementary school and grew up together, bonding over the love they shared for their unique hobbies – computer programming for Caleb and writing for Edgar. Caleb is dutiful and responsible, but knows how important it is to make an effort to stay connected with the people in his life. When Caleb was a teenager, their father died in a car accident, and their mother raised them and their older sister on their own. Caleb's father was a deeply selfless person, and, through their experience of losing someone they loved very much, Caleb learned the hard way that it is important to cherish the time we have with our family and friends. This casting is open to a female or a male actor.
