June doesn't tell any of her family members that she has crippling anxiety and depression. She booked the therapy session herself with Doctor Evelyn, and this is her first time trying out this method without any promises or hopes. June struggles to get the thoughts out into words and once Doctor Evelyn asks her if she has any friends, that's when the truth comes out. June tells Evelyn that her one and only best friend is The Girl, (aka her depression), who is in the room, but only June can see her. The "best friend" that she describes isn't necessarily a good friend. Instead, her fuel to stay happy is when June's in pain. June battles with her own thoughts since her friend likes to stick around to twist and turns everything to what she thinks is right, not for June's sake. At the end, June understands and accepts this part of herself. She gives her friend a hug and says "I got you". And because only June can see the girl, in Doctor Evelyn's P.O.V, she sees the hug as June hugs herself- an act of self-love.
