Audition Description

Allen, a young, African American boy, is forced by his parents to switch from his neighborhood public school to a more conservative, private catholic school in pursuit of better education, prior to the start of 6th grade. On his first day, accompanied by his dad, Allen discovers from a Nun that he will have to conform to the needs of the learning environment & in turn sacrifice the one last piece of his closely valued identity… his perfectly shaped & crafted Afro. The adjustment, is not one that he is willing to accept so easily.

  • Role #1 - Allen

    Allen is a quietly troubled character filled with resentment. He is not a bad kid, but easily influenced as kids are from time to time. He takes pride in his style from his clothes, the way he walks & talks, but most importantly his hair. Kids his age don\'t wear afro\'s styled like his unless they\'re a huge fan of the 70\'s. Now he\'s had all of that \"cool\" taken away only to be replaced by pressed pants, tucked in polo\'s, & brown hush puppies. Must have an afro/ bush of some noticeable length - NOTE: character will NOT have to cut hair for this film

    Allen's dad is a teddy bear & a goofball, yet stern when he has to be. He lives for old classic r&b groups that slide out like the delfonics, temptations, or earth wind & fire. He takes Allen to school every morning where they get a bit of bonding time. This day is a little different however. Allen, showing his frustration, is proving to him just why they are choosing to send him to a catholic school in the first place.
