Roles in this project

Role #6501238

Cheol

Lead. A first generation Korean American son. He's a hardened 20-year-old trying his best – but he never feels like he's been enough. Specifically, he doesn't think he's living up to his father's expectations. His childhood was difficult because of that, where his own father didn't really know how to express love. That was exacerbated when Cheol lost his mother at the age of eight. She was the only source of warmth in the home – and now she was gone. That and the ridicule and traumas that accompany Asians in America has turned him into the hardened young man we see – one defined by his past. Must be able to speak Korean. Fluency is not required, but general speaking abilities are required. Must be comfortable manipulating hair (i.e: shaving or cutting)

Role #6501239

Gong

Secondary Lead. A 50-year-old Korean immigrant barber and Cheol's father. He's cut hair for 30 years of his life, where he's worked at the same, run down shop since the family moved to America. To support his family, he's never missed a day of work and has always been the one to stay strong for them. To him, that means never showing weakness, even when his wife passes away. That's because of his conservative Korean ideology, one typical of most Korean men. He teaches Cheol the same, where he ultimately just wants the best for his son, thinking strength and stoicism are what will best equip Cheol to endure life's hardships. That said, Gong is a soft man under his stone wall – one who conceals his feelings. Must be fluent in Korean. Must be comfortable manipulating hair (i.e: shaving or cutting)

Role #6501240

Hena

A deeply empathetic and fiercely protective Korean mother. She exudes warmth and is someone who's willing to do anything for her family, no matter the lengths. In fact, that's why she even came to the States – to provide a better life for her husband, Gong, and son, Cheol. She came here for Law School, but would skip classes when Cheol feigned sickness because of bullies at school. To her, happiness is more important over that of material success. Must be fluent in Korean.

Young Cheol

A shy Korean, softboy attending a new school in a new country (America). He has a strong disdain for conflict & loves everything that has to do with the arts. He loves his parents dearly, but gravitates towards his empathetic mother versus his stern father. Fluency in Korean preferred.
