Audition Description

River Hall tends to her comatose older brother, Sam, in their shared cramped, threadbare, late 80s style bedroom. She works through his daily exercises while discussing her future plans to pursue music. She moves on to watering the lush plants around the room, a ladybug resting on one of their leaves, as the sound of their mother, Nancy, coming home can be heard through the walls. Within moments Nancy and her husband Frank are arguing, drawing River out of the room. At night, River is reading, and once again the sound of Nancy and Frank's arguing fills the room to join the noises of the apartment neighbors and the busy street outside. As the sound of Nancy sobbing picks up, River begins to play her violin. A calm falls over the apartment, the building, the street outside. Only music can be heard, until River makes a mistake and the discordant atmospheric noises rush back in. The next day, while River is at her music school audition, Nancy rushes through Sam's daily exercises before leaving for work. During a rare moment of quiet in the bedroom the ladybug flits about until it is startled by Frank's arrival in the room. He reflects for a moment on Sam's condition before half heartedly throwing a baseball to him, which rolls off the bed and onto the ground. Some time later, Nancy and Frank help River pack and then take her things down to the waiting cab. She is getting ready to leave for school. River approaches Sam, the bedroom in a state of disarray and the plants looking slightly withered, to say her final goodbye. She tells Sam to give her a sign and she will stay, but no sign comes. After she is gone, a tear can be seen falling from Sam's eye. Time passes again, before Nancy is seen going through Sam's routine again. She takes a moment to reflect upon the state of the family and what she wanted from life, losing track of time Nancy realizes she is late for work and rushes from the room. Later, Frank comes into the room to continue Sam's care but his injured leg gives out, causing him to spill all of the feeding formula. In a fit Frank throws the baseball across the room, shattering the family portrait. Frank leaves to get more formula, and when Nancy arrives back home she finds the mess that Frank left. The moment Frank gets back home another argument explodes between him and Nancy, fed up Nancy decides to leave for good. Later still, Frank can be heard beyond the walls of Sam's room drinking and watching family home videos. Moments pass, before Frank drags his television set up into the bedroom. A drunk and distraught Frank talks to Sam about how he believes they're both survivors and that Sam just needs motivation, before he disconnects Sam's feeding tube. Frank sits in a chair next to Sam's bed, surrounded by now withered plants, watching old family movies, while a ladybug flies away through the open window.

  • Role #1 - River Hall

River is a Caucasian female in her early 20s. She has a fair complexion and soft features. She has a gentle, innocent, and warm appearance and a kind and loving personality, even in the face of her families difficulties. She puts a lot of energy into trying to keep the peace at home, and after Sam's accident River fills the role of being the emotional support of the family as the mental and financial burden of his lose strains their parents. Although she tries to hide it, her parents fighting and brothers comatose state weigh heavily on her. River is also driven and puts a lot of pressure on herself to succeed and make the most of the opportunities that are provided to her, especially those provided by her brother. Part of this is motivated by the knowledge of the sacrifices her brother made and wanting to live up to his expectations and belief in her. She is always practicing her violin and aspires to be a professional musician. Eventually, River is accepted into the performing arts school she has always wanted to go to. However, in order to move forward in her own life she has to come to terms with her brothers condition and learn to say farewell.

  • Role #2 - Nancy Hall

Nancy is a fair skinned Caucasian female in her late 40s to early 50s. She often looks tired and unkempt due to constant stress and overwork. She can also come across as irritable and emotional, especially in regards to Frank. In reality, Nancy is a hard worker, and is the sole provider for her family. After Frank's injury, the family lost their main source of income and insurance. Nancy picked up any jobs she could to make ends meet, currently she works as a laundry attendant during the day and as a waitress in the nearby diner at night. She comes home mentally exhausted only to deal with more issues. There are times when Nancy can come across as cold, however this is not due to a lack of caring but rather an exhaustion of her compassion. Nancy refers to her husband by his first name, Frank, to highlight her dispassion and a de-personalization of their relationship. In regards to Sam, she is almost apathetic, not sharing the hopes and beliefs that he's still there. For Nancy, it's easier to cope with the idea that her son is gone than the idea that he is suffering. River is Nancy's one tie to their old life, and when River leaves for school, it is a bitter sweet moment for Nancy. She is happy for her daughter, but realizes that there is nothing left of the family she had built. Nancy struggles to come to terms with this fact. She was once a happy wife and mother of two, motivated to provide for her family. However, the idea of family that she had has been torn from her and she no longer has the life she wanted.

  • Role #3 - Frank Hall

Frank is a Caucasian male in his mid to late 50s. He has a face creased from stress and reddened from alcohol. Once an easy going blue collar worker, life has not been kind to Frank. He made his living as a welder and spent his free time coaching Sam through little league and attending River's music recitals. However, all of this changed when Frank badly injured himself at work, leaving his left leg severely mangled. Not only did this injury leave Frank unable to work, due to the contract he signed with the company he was also screwed out of insurance coverage. Although Frank struggles with many tasks now, his pride refuses to let him just sit around and do nothing. Sam's injury was another large emotional blow to Frank. He became dependent on alcohol to help him cope with both his physical and mental pain. Frank still has a deep love for his family and is frustrated by his inability to provide for them. He cares for Nancy, but also feels ashamed by his constant blunders. He feels like he is partly responsible for Sam's condition, because of his injury Sam had to enter the workforce and give up on his future, and he holds onto Sam because he believes they are both survivors. In a way, giving up on Sam requires Frank to acknowledge his own failings. Frank is incredibly proud of River, but is protective of her safety, for fear that she too will have her future ruined.

  • Role #4 - Sam Hall

Sam is a Caucasian male in his late 20s or early 30s with a paler complexion than his family members. He has a gaunt face, with sunken yet large and expressive eyes. He was once athletic but is now skinny due to the disuse of his body. Due to a head injury, Sam has an extreme version of pseudo coma (locked in syndrome / LIS) known as 'complete locked-in state' (CLIS). Sam's diagnosis was that of a simple coma however, so his family is not aware of the extent of his cognitive function. Sam was a rock in his family. He would have sacrificed anything for those closest to him, especially his younger sister River. When his father was no longer able to work, he dropped out of college to help support his family. A large part of this was because River was aiming to go to performing arts school for music and the cost of practice, supplies, and other things were becoming too high for the family. Sam believed River's aspirations were more important than his own. **This is a non speaking part but this character will be in the room the entire time in almost every shot**
