Black Adam is a supervillain appearing in the American comic books published by DC Comics. Created by Otto Binder and C.C. Beck, the character is one of the archenemies of superhero Captain Marvel and the nemesis of the Marvel Family. Black Adam first appeared in the first issue of Fawcett Comics' The Marvel Family comic book in 1945. However, he revived in the 1970s as a recurring character in the Shazam/Formerly Captain Marvel Family stories.
Black Adam was originally described as a corrupted ancient Egyptian predecessor of Captain Marvel, who fights his way to modern times to challenge the Marvel Family associates. But, in the 2000s, Black Adam was re-defined by DC Comics Jerry Ordway, Geoff Johns, and David S. Goyer, as a corrupted antihero attempting to clear his name and reputation. Featured roles in such comic book series including Justice Society of America, Villains United, Infinite Crisis, and 52. In 2009, IGN ranked Black Adam as IGN's 16th greatest comic book villain of all time.
