Are you looking to break into the world of plus size modeling?

If you are taller or larger than the average human being, you may have what it takes to be a plus-size model but you'll also need drive and desire to make it in the industry.

If you've think you've got what it takes and you're interested in plus size modeling, here are some basic tips to getting started.

When you're first breaking into the plus-size modeling industry, you won't need a full portfolio to begin making inquiries. Instead, concentrate on photographs that show your natural beauty and that aren't particularly staged or posed.

Aim for at least one high-quality face shot and a full-body shot in simple, flattering attire.

Image is everything in plus-size modeling. Many casting directors or producers are looking for a certain type for a certain character.

For example, Rikki Lake was cast in the movie "Hairspray" when she was just 19 because she was the right weight for the character she was playing.

More and more print and television ads are being produced with plus-size models. Playtex is currently running a bra campaign that features plus-size models and the television show "Mike and Molly" has two stars who are plus-size models.

Lane Bryant held a large-scale lingerie fashion show to launch the "Cacique Intimates" lingerie collection on February 1, 2000. The 2003 final large-scale catwalk show featured Roseanne Barr as Matron of Ceremonies in a cabaret setting complete with Moulin Rouge-style singers and dancers.

As with any type of modeling, becoming a plus size model involves dedication, hard work and perseverance. You should plan on going to as many auditions as possible and to constantly check talent sites like Explore Talent for auditions listed in your area.

When you arrive for your audition as a plus size model, make sure that you dress for the part, are well-groomed and have a positive attitude. Make sure to smile, make eye contact and listen well.

Several plus-size models have had long and successful careers in the industry and there are many plus-size celebrities who have also flourished, including Mia Tyler, daughter of Aerosmith singer Steven Tyler and Cyrinda Foxe-Tyler and half-sister of actress Liv Tyler, began plus-size modeling at age 20 via an appearance in Seventeen.

She was represented by Wilhelmina Models and worked for companies seeking to associate themselves with her rock'n roll lifestyle and aesthetic. Tyler appeared in Vogue U.S. in its annual "Shape Issue" in 2003 and on the cover of Figure Magazine in May 2006.

Becoming a plus-size model is just one way to break into the entertainment industry. There are all kinds of resources available to models, actors and dancers. The first place to start is to check out talent agents and companies who can help give you tips for auditioning and landing that first job.
