Guest Musical Director
About the show
Giacomo Puccinis opera, La Bohème, is loosely the basis for this highly celebrated, multi-award winning rock musical about falling in love, finding your voice and living for today. It tells the story of a group of impoverished young artists and musicians struggling to survive and create in New Yorks Lower East Side in the thriving days of Bohemian Alphabet City, under the shadow of a growing health epidemic. How these young bohemians negotiate their dreams, loves, and conflicts provides the narrative thread to this groundbreaking musical. Its exuberant, passionate, and joyous story resonates with audiences of all ages.
Rent is performed by a cast of five principal men, three principal women, and an ensemble of seven men and women. A company of strong singers with some level of music-reading ability (mostly rhythms, harmonic context, and melodic contour) is needed. The show is very physical and will also involve a lot of musical percussion performed by the cast. Due to show content and requirements, casting will be restricted to performers 18 years of age and older.
The audition will consist of singing 16 bars (measures) of ONE prepared rock or rock musical song of your choice. A selection from the show is fine. A piano accompanist will be provided. You may also provide your own. No karaoke/a cappella singing.
