The 39 Steps is an hilarious reworking of the 1935 Alfred Hitchcock film: The original classic British thriller was one of Alfred Hitchcocks first major international successes. The stage version follows the films main plot points, and even much of the dialog but is written to be performed by just four actors as a comedy!
Heres the basic plotline: Canadian Richard Hannay goes to the London theatre to see Mr. Memory perform. In the midst of the show, shots ring out, and a terrified woman begs Hannay to take her back to his room (what luck!) She tells him she is a spy whose life has been threatened. Just before her untimely (and hilarious) demise, she gives him a map of Scotland and tells him something about The 39 Steps. Now Hannay is in danger, but he gives the bad guys the slip and heads for Scotland by train, discovering from a fellow passengers newspaper that he (Hannay) is suspected of murdering the woman he left in his flat. On the train, he meets another woman (Pamela) who at first tries to turn him in, but later ends up assisting him in discovering what the 39 Steps really are.
The show is extremely fast paced, for both actors and crew. Sets change quickly, and are often simple objects, such as ladders, chairs, trunks, etc., are used to suggest the scene. It is the actors challenge to make these spaces seem real.
A quick-witted crew will be needed to move set pieces, help actors with fast changes, and special effects. If youve worked on Greater Tuna you have an idea of how this show works but crank it up about five notches.
The rehearsal period is longer than is usual for non-musicals, to allow for the complexity of the show. SOME accents will be required, but we are not placing a lot of emphasis on the British accent, except in a few places.
The show will require a lot of work but should also be an extremely FUN challenge for all of us. Scripts may be perused by appointment at the Opera House.
