Curtis Reeves has been denied bail in Tampa, Florida after shooting another man in a movie theater. Reeves, 71, faces second degree murder charges and could be sentenced to life in prison, CNN.com reports.
The incident in questioned occurred before a matinee showing of “Lone Survivor” Monday when Reeves, a retired police officer, had an argument with Chad Oulsen, another theater patron, because Oulsen was texting on his phone. The two men exchanged words and then Reeves left the theater to alert a manager about Oulsen’s texting. When he was unable to speak to a theater employee, Reeves returned to the theater and continued to argue with Oulsen.
Oulsen reportedly threw a bag of popcorn at Reeves, who drew a handgun and shot Oulsen. Oulsen’s wife was also struck in the hand by the shot as she tried to subdue her husband, according to Time. After the shooting, Reeves sat down and the encounter ceased. An off-duty deputy who was in the theater rushed to reeves and confiscated the pistol. Reeves was soon arrested. Oulsen died a short time later.
In his initial hearing, Reeves’ attorney made the case that Reeves was defending himself when he fired, as Oulsen had thrown something at him. The judge refuted this claim and denied bail to reeves, who remains in custody and has been advised that he is charged with second-degree murder and could face life in prison.Image courtesy of MyFoxTampaBay.com
