Don't drive so fast," the father exhorts in the largely autobiographical story "The Doctor's Son

More than half of O'Hara's 400 short stories had found their way into The New Yorker, and "Butterfield 8" and "Pal Joey" onto the big screen No day job lasted long, given O'Hara's frequent benders and bombastic temper

But by the late 1920s, he was writing regularly for The New Yorker, which continued to publish his work, except during a decade-long feud over a colleague's scathing review of his 1949 novel, "A Rage to Live His father, who according to Wolff earned an astonishing $25,000 a year in 1905, left his widow with eight children and five vehicles when he died in 1925, but no will and almost no money

"And my God! To think that a son of mine would rather rot in a dirty stinking newspaper office than to do this , during a happy second marriage that produced his only child, daughter Wylie O'Hara Doughty, whom he adored , and finally New York City "

Critics derided O'Hara's novels, which could stretch to over 900 pages, as bloated

"There was something about institutional approval that "Appointment in Samarra" would later rank 22nd on a list of the best 20th-century novels written in English " Although he came to dismiss the idea, some biographical parallels remain "It's difficult to imagine how so short a story can give more," Wolff writes

"It is all here â€â€? and more of it is there than anyone else has put down or will put down

These childhood conflicts fueled O'Hara's writing, as they do many creative efforts

Scott Fitzgerald and Ernest Hemingway

After his father's death, O'Hara worked a series of menial jobs before landing short stints at newspapers in Pottsville, Tamaqua, Pa "

O'Hara, who spent his lifetime lusting for all things Yale, never did go to college

A new biography aims to change that And his refusal to allow his works to be anthologized kept them off college reading lists and from new generations of readers J

Wolff's book includes a reprint of the chilling, seven-page story "How Can I Tell You?" â€â€? in which a car salesman ponders suicide He settled down in Princeton, N

Wolff, who directs the graduate fiction program at the University of California at Irvine, liberally cites previous O'Hara biographies, and adopts a conversant, non-scholarly tone

O'Hara employs reams of small details â€â€? the slant of a hat, the cut of a suit â€â€? to reveal a person's character

"It would be difficult to imagine this fiction written by a John O'Hara who'd gone to St

O'Hara complained aloud about perceived slights â€â€? about not getting an honorary degree from Yale, not winning the Nobel Prize â€â€? to the point of inspiring ridicule (he) simply couldn't abide," Wolff writes, about the time a boozy O'Hara, stumbling back to his Niagara Prep campus on graduation morning, was stripped of valedictory honors

Casting doubt, for example, on an anecdote that O'Hara earned the highest-ever average at one of several prep schools he passed through, Wolff writes parenthetically: "this biographer, who confesses to a lazy failure to chase down and pin facts of this nature, absolutely disbelieves (it) "

"Appointment in Samarra," published in 1934, follows the Christmas-week parties of the country-club set, the air thick with entitlement and envy

"All people have to do is to read the stories, read 'Appointment in Samarra,' and it will take care of itself," Geoffrey Wolff, author of "The Art of Burning Bridges: A Life of John O'Hara," said Why, I do more good and make more money in twenty minutes in the operating room than you'll be able to make the first three years you're out of college

O'Hara, an Irish Catholic doctor's son from Pottsville, the Schuylkill County seat 75 miles northwest of Philadelphia, mined the mores and manners of the small-town Protestant elite to write his thinly disguised tales about fictional "Gibbsville Neither one measured up to his old man's vision, letting alcohol-fueled high jinks blow last-ditch chances to win his father's grace

"I wouldn't say it's as good as 'The Great Gatsby,' but it's certainly breathing the same air," Wolff said "

Yet O'Hara's boorish personality and passe literary style â€â€? he clung to realism when minimalism was in vogue â€â€? kept his star a notch below those of such contemporaries as F

"As soon as all the people who knew him die off, people will come to share my (admiring) opinion," writer Fran Lebowitz said in a Paris Review interview

"I have deliberately attempted to record the first half of the century in fictional forms but with the quasi-historical aspect that, say, Dickens achieved," O'Hara once proclaimed, revealing the breadth of both his ambition and hubris If you go to college

"Harry Reilly was telling a dirty story in an Irish brogue, which was made slightly more realistic or funny by the fact that his bridgework, done before the Reillys came into the big money, did not fit too well, and Harry as a result always whistled faintly when he spoke," O'Hara wrote The family fortunes were reversed Biography Could Stir John O'Hara Interest

When John O'Hara died in 1970, his publisher, Bennett Cerf, declared him one of the most underrated writers in America Paul's, joined Fence Club at Yale, and been tapped by Bones (the secretive Yale club)," Wolff writes

But O'Hara's later years proved more sanguine "

Wolff set out thinking O'Hara's life might lend him insight into his own ne'er-do-well father, the subject of his tender 1979 memoir, "The Duke of Deception

But he could also be spare

Both O'Hara and Wolff were first-born sons of doting mothers and successful, hypercritical, physician-fathers

O'Hara also refused to follow his father into medicine, though as a youngster he had tagged along to the coal mines and "Irish patches" where his father treated gruesome mine disasters, raging influenza epidemics and other early-20th century scourges

" The paper simply printed the letter, without comment

A week ago, Harry began his two-month stay in the tiny southern African kingdom of Lesotho, currently suffering from a severe drought

Harverson wrote that the prince had insisted he spend his time there working on projects for disadvantaged children, rather than on VIP visits

His father sent him to a south London rehabilitation clinic for a day so he could talk to recovering addicts and see the dangers of drug use

"I can assure you that his two months there will be anything but `lavish'," Harverson wrote, calling Sarler's column a "very unfair and unfounded attack on Prince Harry's character" that showed "little or no understanding of Harry as a person "

The Daily Express's Carol Sarler devoted several hundred words in her column Wednesday to roasting Prince Harry, who has been traveling and working in Australia and Africa since he finished his education at Eton in June

"During his three-month stay in Australia, Harry spent more than two-thirds of his time working on cattle farms," fencing, herding cattle, branding and general laboring, Harverson said

Two years ago, Harry was widely reported to have indulged in underage drinking and smoking marijuana

Friday's Daily Express published a letter from Paddy Harverson, Prince Charles' press secretary, calling the Sarler column "grossly unfair and ill-informed Spokesman Defends Prince Harry
Feb 20, 12:47 PM EST

LONDON, England (AP) -- A royal spokesman sprang to the defense of Prince Harry in a letter published Friday after a tabloid columnist called Prince Charles' younger son a "national disgrace "

Prince Harry has chosen a military career and is due to enter Sandhurst military academy after his time off

She ridiculed the Australian sojourn, making comments about his behavior at rugby matches there, and said he has now "opted for eight lavish weeks in interesting parts of Africa, where he has reluctantly agreed to spend a bit of the trip staring at poor people "

"That Prince Harry is a national disgrace is scarcely news," she said
