The annual breakfast is sponsored by the city and the Cincinnati Arts Consortium has asked the city to cancel a Jan " The breakfast kicks off the city's Martin Luther King Day celebration, which includes a march through downtown and a program and speeches at Music Hall 20 breakfast honoring his father, saying it would violate an economic boycott by black activists However, in an e-mail to boycott leader Amanda Mayes, Hardin said "the decision to go forward is final Martin Luther King III, president of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference, wrote the consortium and e-mailed Mayor Charlie Luken in November, "suggesting, requesting, even begging to use every possible means to prevent such a planned event " She said the consortium board had discussed the boycott and decided they couldn't jeopardize the group's biggest fund-raiser The boycott began after a white police officer fatally shot an unarmed, fleeing black man in April 2001 Sharon Hardin, executive director of the consortium, couldn't be reached for comment Boycott supporters are trying to pressure the city into making changes they say are needed to improve the lives of black residents King said the breakfast would be a "defilement" of his father's dream, but made no request to cancel the march or the program Martin Luther King Jr "I am alarmed when a city would take a breakfast in my father's honor to violate the nonviolent boycott," he wrote King Son to Cincinnati: Cancel Breakfast Jan 3, 4:24 AM EST The son of the Rev Stevie grew up poor and poorly educated in rural Pomona, Ill At the Movies: 'Stevie' Apr 9, 3:45 PM EST "Stevie" is actually about two guys nam0ed Steve: One is the subject of the documentary, Stevie Fielding; the other the documentarian himself, Steve James Stevie's life has been a classic example of the system failing at every opportunity; volatile and violent, the victim of rape and abuse, he bounced between foster homes, was placed in classrooms for children with behavioral problems and even spent time in a mental hospital under heavy drug therapy He personifies every negative stereotype of poor white people living in rural areas: His wardrobe consists of camouflage (when he wears a shirt, that is), he's scruffy and tattooed, he drinks cheap beer and smokes pot, he's obsessed with guns, fishing and Harley-Davidsons, and he's in serious need of dental care Running time: 144 minutes The film is a wrenching, unflinching look at a severely troubled man on the verge of redemption, but it's hard to shake the feeling that it's just as much about James' redemption, if not more Two and a half stars out of four " William Gates and Arthur Agee, the young basketball players of James' earlier film, were by no means saints, but you wanted to see them succeed James wanted to use his power as a filmmaker to shine a light on Stevie's plight, in theory, so that the rest of us could learn from it Stevie is angry, closed-minded and racist " Because the subject of "Stevie" is so unlikable, it's harder to connect emotionally with the film than "Hoop Dreams Before James made his vivid 1994 documentary "Hoop Dreams," about two high school basketball players who aspire to play in the National Basketball Association, he was a Big Brother to Stevie while attending Southern Illinois University " The director comes close to acknowledging the film's exploitative nature during an epiphany he has in a voiceover: "As we drove I kept thinking, Stevie had wanted to be in this film mostly to spend time with me again, and here I was, repaying him by putting his tortured life on display Nothing worked, James learned when he finally visited Stevie after a decade away â€â€? and brought the camera with him " And yet he kept the camera rolling I've never had one," he says At 24, Stevie had the maturity of a boy half his age "Stevie" is often hard to watch because Stevie, the man, is hard to watch "I don't have a mother He comes close to acknowledging as much in the film's production notes: "Indeed, on a personal level, I wanted to make this film as an act of atonement for my own failures to reach him, when I was his Big Brother, and for my guilt over having abandoned him for the past 10 years He'd been arrested repeatedly, and during the course of filming, was charged with sexually assaulting the 8-year-old daughter of one of his mother's friends, whom he baby-sat , and by 11, already had lived a full, tormented life " If James didn't derive some sense of satisfaction from his time spent with Stevie, it would be impossible to understand why he hangs out with him at all Born out of wedlock, his mother, Bernice, never told him who his father was He said he didn't intend to become such a major figure in the film â€â€? he's as prominent as Stevie's mother, sister, and Stevie himself â€â€? but he inserts himself in the frame and cuts away to himself so often, it borders on self-indulgence James' camera scrutinizes Stevie and his family with the fascination of watching animals in the zoo â€â€? or guests on "The Jerry Springer Show "Stevie," a Lions Gate Films release, is not rated but contains language and drug use He holds vitriolic grudges against his fiancee's family, who never approved of him, and against his own "The day she dies, I'm gonna go and I'm gonna laugh at her She beat him so severely as a child that he lost the ability to speak, then dumped him with his step-grandmother, Verna, all the while living in a trailer next door |
